Traditional Vs. Indie Vs. Hybrid Publishing

So you want to write a book?

How amazing! As a best selling author of 10 books, I LOVE writing and truly enjoy the publishing process. While many new authors focus on writing it's important to remember that is only a piece of the puzzle. Publishing and marketing are also very important aspects of becoming an author--- sadly many people wait until its too late to consider this.Recently I read an article that said that there are 5000 books being published every single day. Unfortunately we come under the assumption that if we publish a book and it's on amazon people will be buying away. This is the furthest thing from the truth. Unless you're intentional and strategic about your launching plan you will for sure launch to crickets. So today I want to share the three options you have for publishing so you can make an informed decision moving forward.

Traditional Publishing

This is when a publisher offers the author a contract and, in turn, prints, publishes, and sells your book through booksellers and other retailers.

Pro's

  • You have a supportive and knowledgeable team which can help to make the publishing process smooth.

  • There are no upfront costs and sometimes you are even offered cash advances.

  • You have the opportunity for greater visibility and reach.

  • This is considered the most valued route by some- so less stigma.

Con's

  • Sharing royalties.

  • Feeling like you have loss of creative control

  • Sometimes difficult contracts.

  • You have the potential to be rejected.

Self Publishing aka Indie Publishing

Self-publishing is the publication of a book or other forms of media by its author without the involvement of an established publisher.

Pro's

  • You get to publish on your own terms.

  • You get a higher royalty percentage.

  • There is usually no rush or deadline stress.

  • The publishing process is often quicker.

Con's

  • It may be difficult to learn all the ins and outs of a successful launch.

  • It can be challenging to find reputable support.

  • Sometimes there is stigma related to self publishing.

  • The process may feel much like operating a business.

Hybrid Publishing

Hybrid publishing is an emerging area that occupies the middle ground between traditional and self-publishing.

Pro's

  • You have a strong team behind you to support you.

  • You often get a higher royalty rate than traditional publishing.

  • Authors have creative control.

  • You can choose a-la-carte options.

Con's

  • The upfront cost are high.

  • Contracts can be confusing or misleading.

  • This is a newer route so it may be less recognized

  • It may feel overwhelming to find the right hybrid publishing house

All in all there is no right decision about how you should launch your book baby. After all its your book. You put your blood sweat and tears into writing it so trust your decision. My desire is to give you the information so you can make an informed decision about how to share your book with the world!
